Taking that first step isn’t always easy, sometimes it takes faith
Taking that first step isn’t always easy, sometimes it takes faith.
Whenever I think about faith like this, I am always reminded of a scene from one of my favorite movies, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Just in case you haven’t seen it, let me give you a summary.
Archeologist Indiana Jones, AKA Indy, grew up watching his father, Henry Jones, search for the Holy Grail, the cup said to have caught the blood of Christ at the cross. Due to this obsession, Indy and Henry are not close.
Years later, Indy and his father reunite when Nazis trick them into finding the cup because they want the immortality rumored to come by drinking from it. The ultimate test comes when Donovan, the man who is financing the search, shoots Indy’s father. Now Indy must use every skill he has, plus a whole lot of faith to save his father before he succumbs to the mortal wound.
The final test is “the leap of faith.” When Indy comes to the mouth of the cave there appears to be no way across. Indy has to rely not on himself, but in something, Just Someone, he cannot see. Just as the writer of Hebrews 11:1, Indy must believe there is a hope for his father even though at that moment he doesn’t see it.
He takes a step into the unknown and when he puts his foot down a bridge across the cavern appears.
I won’t spoil the rest of the movie if you haven’t seen it. (If you haven’t I cannot recommend it enough, it is awesome!)
The question we have to ask ourselves is the same one Indy had to ask:
What do you believe?
When evil comes against us, will we allow all of our doubts and fears to destroy us? Alternatively, will we have faith in the One who says He will be with us?
Deuteronomy 31:6, from The Message translation, tells us to “Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; He won’t leave you.”
Now that plays out better in our lives and mind than anything Hollywood could ever produce or imagine!
Are you ready?
Are you ready to step out in faith?
Let’s do this!
It’s time to believe that He is with us every step we take. Let’s take that leap into His open and loving arms!
